Ayahuasca Pilgrimage?

Posted by Robert on Nov 15 2008 | 2 Comments »

The dark spectre of ayahuasca tourism is dealt with in only one chapter of The Jaguar that Roams the Mind, and tangentially at that. Yet in interviews and reviews of the book, it is emerging as a primary concern. It seems appropriate, therefore, to address the issue head-on. I confess, when I first began my pilgrimages to the Amazon, the concept of an ayahuasca tourist hadn’t even occurred to me, nor did I know the truly damaging effect of this sham industry on indigenous culture.

The Jaguar that Roams the Mind:
An Amazonian Plant Spirit Odyssey

by Robert Tindall

Robert’s book, published this Fall by Inner Traditions, is an account of his journey into the vanishing world of Amazonian shamanism.

Inspired by the largely unexplored healing potentials of Amazonian medicine, Robert dedicated himself to journeying through the beleaguered communities of the Amazon to experience first hand their native medicinal tradition. The work shares his journeys through the inner and outer landscape of the churches of ayahuasca and with the Kaxinawa Indians in Brazil; his experiences at the pioneering center for the treatment of addiction, Takiwasi, in Peru; and his studies with the Ashaninca master shaman Juan Flores deep in the rainforest jungle.

Most of all, this book is an engaged attempt to bridge the depths and sacredness of the vegetalismo cosmology and practices to our Western minds.

Endorsements

Besides the poignant introduction, written by the acclaimed ethnobotanist Mark Plotkin from the Amazon Conservation Team, specialists on plant medicines comment on the book:

“Like the twists and turns of ayahuasca, the sacred vine of the Amazon, this wonderful narrative of love and self-discovery connects vast inner worlds of dream and vision, power and magic, with a passionate pilgrimage in time and space. A joy to read.”

Luis Eduardo Luna, author of Vegetalismo and coathor of Ayahuasca Visions

“If you want to know what vegetalismo is really like, you could go to Amazon, or you could read this book.

Dale Pendell, author of Pharmako/Gnosis:
Plant Teachers and the Poison Path

Notes on our pilgrimage to India

She Who Deigns to Destroy You

India is a multi-armed deity, who reveals her features in a whirling of limbs. Like a magician, she always has another rabbit in her hat; like a courtesan, she always has another device to pleasure; or like an executioner, she always has another blade to cut off your life. Make three deep bows! One glimpse into the maternal folds of Mother India’s multi-layered garments can change your understanding of life entirely.

Notes of our pilgrimage to India

It’s a humid, lethargic morning here in Auroville, after a sudden rain and a brilliant, solitary flash of lightening passed over rapidly in the night. Like a slowly settling blanket, the heat descends every morning in Southern India, until the cloud-cover breaks and the sun beams through. Finally a breeze begins to arise, cooling the layer of sweat that coats your body day and night.
